Hummingbirds are part of the family Trochilidae in which thousands of different birds from the genus occur in America. Sylph hummingbirds, with the genus Aglaiocercus, are part of the family of hummingbirds and are found mostly in South America.
The genus Aglaiocercus has three different sylph hummingbirds, long-tailed sylph (Aglaiocercus kingi), violet-tailed sylph (Aglaiocercus coelestis), and venezuelan sylph (Aglaiocercus berlepschi).
The long-tailed sylph (Aglaiocercus kingi) is the most widespread sylph bird species in the genus and is the only sylph found on the eastern slopes of the Andes, the mountain range in South America that goes through Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Colombia. Tandayapa, in Ecuador, is also a hotspot for the violet-tailed sylph.
Sylph hummingbirds are long-tailed South American sylphs with green bodies and glossy purple and blue details on their body and tails. The long-tailed sylph and the violet-tailed sylph are often mistaken for one another as they look quite the same in many aspects, including their blue-green coloration and long tail feathers.
However, the male and female species of the birds have some range of differences. Although the long-tailed sylph and the violet-tailed sylph have many similarities in the description, their range of distribution does not normally coincide.

The Venezuelan sylph bird is found in forest and scrubland on coastal mountain slopes from 4757-5905 ft (1,450-1,800 m) above sea level. They do not overlap with the range in the wild of the long-tailed sylph bird species.
All the bird species are also seen at hummingbird feeders and flying over them. The lodges in Tandayapa Valley in Ecuador have these feeders where the violet-tailed sylphs can be seen in large numbers.
What is a sylph hummingbird's habitat?
The long-tailed sylph is found from Venezuela south to Bolivia and is the only sylph bird species found on the eastern slopes of the Andes. They are also found on the western slopes of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador.
The violet-tailed sylph is found along the Pacific coast of the western Andes of both Colombia and north and central Ecuador. They are also found in southwest Ecuador. Hummingbird feeders in the lodges of the Tandayapa Valley in and around January are frequently visited by the blue-green bird species for feeding, after heavy showers.
The Venezuelan sylph is found in the coastal mountain ranges of northeast Venezuela. The range of these birds with long tail feathers is quite restricted and the population is declining.

These hummingbirds are usually solitary, except for breeding season. They do not stay in flocks. They also do not bond in pairs.
