Despite being a fictional character, Pitt has a lot in common with his creator. Cussler is an avid adventurer who has explored some of the most remote corners of the globe.
Cussler's son, Dirk Cussler, is the namesake of this well-known fictional character. In this article, we'll take a look at the fictional character Dirk Pitt and explore his many adventures!
Biography And Career
Dirk Eric Pitt, son of California Senator George Pitt, was born in Newport Beach, California. During the Korean War, Dirk emerged from the United States Air Force Academy and worked as a pilot in the United States Air Force.
Dirk is an accomplished pilot who has flown both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. He worked his way up to the rank of major. During his service, Pitt gained the Distinguished Flying Cross with two clusters, a Silver Star, a Purple Heart, and numerous additional honors.
Dirk Pitt received one of these honors for shooting down Admiral James Sandecker's plane. The plane was carrying the Admiral and his entourage to an isolated outpost north of Da Nang.
The North Vietnamese took over the base without their knowledge, and their radio was damaged, so they couldn't hear a warning.
Pitt was returning to base after a bombing mission when he was ordered to intercept and inform the admiral in whatever way he could.
Pitt expertly knocked out both engines on the transport when attempts to contact the Admiral's jet failed, forcing them to ditch in the ocean rather than land at the captured base. Following that, Dirk flew cover, strafing any boats attempting to depart the shore until everyone was taken onto a naval patrol vessel.
Dirk's military record was altered in the film versions of 'Raise The Titanic!' and 'Sahara', and he was meant to have graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Dirk graduated with his boyhood best friend, Al Giordino, in both versions.
After leaving the military, Dirk worked as a marine engineer for the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), an oceanographic research agency directed by Admiral James Sandecker. During his stay at NUMA, Dirk uncovered a lot of shipwrecks and prevented a number of villains' plans for global tragedy or world dominion.
In recent novels, Dirk has taken charge of NUMA, succeeding Admiral Sandecker, who was chosen Vice President of the United States after his predecessor died abruptly in office. Despite his promotion, Pitt is unhappy with a desk job and continues to command a variety of field missions, where he finds entangled in devious schemes just as easily as before.
Personal Traits
Dirk is 6 ft 3 in (190.5 cm) tall, with a rangy physique, rugged features, and black wavy hair. Cussler frequently mentions Dirk's 'opaline green eyes' which can be both intimidating and enchanting depending on the situation.
Pitt possesses a dominating presence that, when paired with a fast, clever wit, enrages his opponents and superiors. During tense moments, Al's comic banter is especially prevalent, providing the reader with no question that both are confident in their talents.
His preferred weapon is a Colt 45-caliber M1911 semi-automatic handgun which he got from his father. Blue agave Tequila is his drink of choice. Dirk prefers to drink cheaper tequila in margaritas and feels that premium tequila should be consumed straight with salt and lime. He wears a Doxa diving watch with an orange face.
Love, Interests, And Family
Summer Moran, Maeve Fletcher, and Loren Smith are three women who have had a profound influence on his life.
Dirk Pitt Jr. and Summer Pitt, his twin children, were raised by Summer Moran. She is said to be Pitt's first genuine love.
She was the scientist Frederick Moran's daughter, and Pitt mistook her for dead when she went missing while trying to save her father when his undersea stronghold fell.
Summer did survive the disaster, but she refused to seek him out because she wanted Pitt to remember her as he knew her, as told by Dirk Pitt Jr., a 23-year-old when the two meet in the last pages of the novel 'Valhalla Rising'. She gave birth to twins soon after and raised them, naming them after their parents.
Dirk meets Maeve Fletcher in 'Shock Wave'. She, like Summer, was the daughter of a crazy, brutal tyrant.
She, on the other hand, refused to work in her family's company or with her villainous father, Arthur Dorsett. Maeve and Pitt initially met while she was a single mother with two children who she supported with her earnings as a tour guide on a cruise in the Antarctic.
She had a master's degree in zoology. Maeve and Dirk expressed their love for one another, but Maeve had already been seriously injured and died in Pitt's arms.
Pitt has been married to congresswoman Loren Smith for a long time, and the couple married before the picture 'Havana Storm' was released.
Dirk Pitt's Cars
Dirk Pitt is an adventurer and a dashing man. As such, it's only natural that he would have a number of cool cars.
