The Aviatyrannis, also known as the Aviatyrannis jurassica, was known to have inhabited the present-day European range. Fossil remains of this tyrannosauroid dinosaur were discovered in the lignite coal mine near Leiria of Guimarota in Alentejo, Portugal. It is known to have existed in the Late Jurassic time period. Not a lot of information is available about this Extinct animal, but it is believed that it used to live in terrestrial habitats. This carnivorous tyrannosauroid used to reproduce through the sexual process of reproduction and in this process, males used to deposit sperm inside bodies of females, and females laid fertilized eggs with developing embryos inside them. This process is common among dinosaurs. Not a lot has been understood about the description of the Aviatyrannis.

This dinosaur is considered to be a small-sized one and research and analysis of the Aviatyrannis skeleton show that the partial right ilium was elongated and also low and had a vertical ridge on the blade surface that was on the outer side above the hip joint. Premaxilla teeth had a D-shaped cross-section. Aviatyrannis teeth, dental and maxillary ones, were known to be elongated and the tooth crown top was known to be flattened. The Aviatyrannis diet is considered to be omnivorous. Fossils were discovered by Oliver Walter Mischa Rauhut in 2000 and were initially referred to as the Stokesosaurus.

The name of this species, Aviatyrannis jurassica, is thought to mean 'tyrant's grandmother from the Jurassic'. The generic name Aviatyrannis is derived from Latin and means 'grandmother' and 'tyrant'. The specific name means 'Jurassic'. The holotype is named IPFUB Gui Th 1. The Aviatyrannis is considered to be one of the oldest known tyrannosauroids. This carnivorous tyrannosauroid lived from 157.3 million years ago to 152.1 million years ago.

It is quite gripping to learn more about this carnivorous tyrannosauroid and if you are interested, read about the Puertasaurus and the Yinlong, too.
