Aerosteon: Dino Fun Facts! 🦕✨
The Aerosteon, also known as the Aerosteon riocoloradense, is known to be a theropod found in present-day Argentina. Fossil remains were discovered in the Plottier Formation.
It existed in the Late Cretaceous period.
Not a lot of information can be found on the Aerosteon habitat, but it has been recorded that it used to inhabit terrestrial habitats. This species was known to reproduce sexually and the male used to deposit sperm inside the female body and the female used to lay fertilized eggs that consisted of embryos that were developing.
Not much can be gathered from fossils about the appearance of this dinosaur but bones show air-filled spaces (pneumatization) which also is evidence that this dinosaur had a respiratory air-sac system very similar to that of a modern bird. The Aerosteon weight is known to be around 0.5-1 ton (500-1,000 kg).
This dinosaur was considered to be a meat-eating species.
The first description of this species was done by Paul Sereno. The holotype specimen was named MCNA-PV-3137 and it included a number of complete and partial vertebrae from the back, the neck, the sacrum, dorsal and cervical ribs, the furcula, the gastralia, the left ilium, the scapulocoracoid, and right and left pubes.
Theories of Sereno also state that the respiratory system of this species was used for maintaining the body temperature and also for breathing.
The Murusraptor and the Aerosteon are considered to have a similar structure to their vertebrae and cranial bones. The Aerosteon meaning when translated is 'air borne'.
It is quite fascinating to learn about this theropod and if you are interested, read about the Yinlong and the Sauropelta, too.
Fun Calico Crab Facts For Kids
The calico crab or the shy-face crab is a native of the western Atlantic Ocean and is found in a wide range of places around the world.
Characterized by its colorful and very beautifully patterned carapace, the calico crab is known by many names such as the box crab, the leopard crab and the shame-faced crab.
Many of these names stem from the fact that during the day, nothing but the eyes of these creatures are visible above sand. Furthermore, their shell is placed in such a way that the crab's face is always guarded. Keep reading to know more facts about calico crabs.
Fun Townsend's Solitaire Facts For Kids
The Townsend's Solitaire or the Myadestes townsendi is a North American bird species. Individuals of the species are most commonly spotted near conifer forests and woodlands, where they can feed on plenty of insects, fruits and berries.
They have a special liking for juniper berries. They are found in high elevations most of the year, but move to lower elevations during the winter.
For birds of this species, the breeding season goes on from May to July, during which the female bird makes a nest on the ground. Pine needles play an integral role in the making of this nest.
These birds are characterized by two things: their gray plumage and their territorial nature. Keep reading to know more facts about these beautiful birds!
Fun Tamarin Facts For Kids
Tamarins form a family of monkeys which are characterized by their small size and long tails. Many of the species of tamarins that we know of today are facing extinction, which is why several conservation efforts are underway.
An interesting fact about tamarins is that females give birth to twins almost every time. The young ones are raised by groups of monkeys in a familial environment, which is a stunning thing to witness.
Tree cover is an essential part of the lives of tamarin monkeys, which is why the conservation status of many of these species is becoming grave with habitat loss. Keep reading to know more facts about tamarins.
Fun Yimenosaurus Facts For Kids
The Yimenosaurus was a popular Sauropodomorph dinosaur. It lived in East Asia while the Hettangian age of the Early Jurassic period was still prevalent. Its fossils were discovered from the Fengjiahe Formation of Yimen in China. Yimenosaurus, meaning 'Yimen lizard' in Greek, was named by Jie Yang, Guohui Wang, and Ziqi Bai in 1990.
Fun Western Capercaillie Facts For Kids
The western capercaillie or Tetrao urogallus is a grouse species which is found in Eurasia. Also known as wood grouse and heather cock, this species is the largest in the grouse family.
Western capercaillies are known for their sexual dimorphism. Males and females of the species look very different. Not only does the color of the plumage differ between males and females of the species, they are nowhere comparable in terms of size either. Keep reading to learn more facts about them.
