The Breviceratops is a herbivorous dinosaur closely related to the Protoceratops. However, the Breviceratops were classified as a separate genus of their own. This herbivore existed during the late Cretaceous period in Asia. The first fossils of this animal were found here, and later as many as 11 specimens were found. Keep reading to know more about this dinosaur!
It is pronounced as 'Brave-e-sir-a-tops'. This was a generic name actually given to the animal, which meant 'short-horned face'.
The Breviceratops was a herbivore.
These dinosaurs roamed the Earth during the Late Cretaceous age.
These animals became extinct about 66 million years ago.
The dinosaur lived in Asia, particularly in what is now known as Mongolia. Their specimens were also found in the Nemegt Basin, Khulsan, and Gobi desert.
The exact habitat of the Breviceratops is not known. Dinosaurs, in general, lived in forests, swamplands, and alongside rivers and streams.
Herbivorous dinosaurs were known to form social groups. However, the nature of the Breviceratops is not known.
Breviceratops belonged to the Ceratopsia group of dinosaurs. Ceratopsia dinosaurs had a lifespan of 70-80 years.
These animals reproduced by laying eggs. The number of eggs per batch is not known.
The specimens of this animal included a skull and lower jaws. Four teeth were also found on the maxillary fragment of a juvenile Breviceratops. Apart from this, some loose teeth were also found. The fossils implied that they had a horned face. Studies have shown that their front legs were shorter than the hind ones.
Dinosaurs were said to have approximately 200 bones.
Dinosaurs usually communicate through sounds, sight, smell, touch, and gestures.
The Breviceratops was 0.8 ft (0.24 m) in length.
The speed at which a Breviceratops moved is not known.
The weight of a Breviceratops has not yet been recorded.
The suffix 'saura' was used for a female dinosaur, while 'saurus' was used for males.
Baby dinosaurs were called hatchlings or nestlings.
This was a non-aggressive herbivore who did not prey on other animals.
It is not known if the Breviceratops was a territorial animal. Some dinosaurs were known to be territorial. They were believed to act like any modern animal when it came to defending their territory.
These animals were not that colorful. The restoration images show that they might have been green-ish gray in color. The underpart of their belly was a light yellow or white color.
In 1990, Sergei Mikhailovich Kurzanov named this species. He came up with the name by combining two words 'brevis' and 'ceratopsia'. 'Brevis' means short in Latin. The latter word was the group of herbivores that these dinosaurs belonged to.
