The Kunpengopterus was a pterosaur that was found in modern-day China. The genus contained two species, Kunpengopterus sinensis and Kunpengopterus antipollicatus.
The fossil remains were found in Northeastern China. It can be understood that they bore a resemblance to modern age birds and lived during the Jurassic period on Earth.
The ideal way to pronounce Kunpengopterus is 'Kun-pen-gop-terus'.
The Kunpengopterus was a pterosaur that belonged to the family of Wukongopteridae. Although it lived around the same time as dinosaurs, it was not a dinosaur.
Scientists and researchers are of the opinion that the Kunpengopterus lived during the middle to late Jurassic period.
Owing to limited information, the exact time period in which this pterosaur became extinct is unknown.
The Kunpengopterus fossil remains have been found in the Tiaojishan Formation that is located in Liaoning, China.
The ideal distribution of habitat for these pterosaur were forests and grasslands.
It is not clear whether they lived in groups or led a solitary life. However, it is said that they were rare.
The lifespan of Kunpengopterus is yet to be ascertained.
Pterosaurs were born from eggs. The eggs underwent internal fertilization, and after incubation, the eggs were hatched.
These pterosaurs had quite a resemblance to modern-day birds. Apart from having an elongated neck and head, it also had long cervical vertebrae. The presence of a skin flap could have been possible. They also had a long tail shaft. The fifth toe in the feet of this dinosaur was curved and long. It is not known how strong their teeth were or if they were deadly.
Owing to limited information, the exact number of bones and dental history in a Kunpengopterus is currently unknown.
They perhaps communicated with one another using vocal signs, body signs, and body movements.
The total length is not known, although the skull is around 4 in (10 cm).
The speed of this creature is not known.
Unfortunately, we do not know much about its weight.
They are simply known as male or female pterosaurs.
A baby Kunpengopterus would be known as a Kunpengopterus hatchling.
It is not known whether they were aggressive or not.
Its name has been derived from Chinese folklore, where Kun meant a whale or a large fish that could transform itself into a big bird called Peng.
It was described and named in the year 2010 by Alexander Wilhelm Armin Kellner, Wang Xiaolin, Jiang Shunxing, Meng Xi Cheng Xin, and Taissa Rodrigues.
