Thus Family Day Canada was proposed as a statutory holiday by Don Getty to allow Canadian citizens to take time off from their busy schedules and celebrate the day with their families.

Louis Riel was a revolutionary who founded the province of Manitoba. The Family Day in Manitoba is named after this famous politician as, Louis Riel Day.
