History And Timeline

Leap year has a long and rich historical timeline. Many events led to the addition of one extra day in the calendars that we follow today. Let's dive into some of the historical occasions related to the leap year.

Establishment Of Julian Calendar

Julius Caesar first introduced a calendar, but it had some missed intercalations. This calendar had 455 days in a year.

45 BCE

Introduction Of Leap Day

To remove the ambiguities, Julius Caesar introduced a new calendar that had, on average, 365.25 days of length (solar year) and 12 months every year. This led to three consecutive years having 365 days and a fourth year having 366 days. Thus providing us with an extra day every four years.

46 BCE

Introduction Of Gregorian Calendar

In this year, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar, which also followed the year starting from January 1 every year. We have followed this calendar since then.

Traditions And Customs

Many people, especially one in five people in Greece, try to avoid getting married in the leap year that comes every four years as they consider it to be bad luck.

Queen Margaret of Scotland sent out a law that stated that no man could reject a woman's marriage proposal during a leap year. She was five years old only when she made the law.

This tradition, however, was enacted even before February 29 was recognized by English law. Men found out loopholes as the day was not legal back then and was just a tradition, and men could turn down the proposals.

Some traditions followed in Denmark can cost a hefty price. There is a tradition in Denmark that if a man rejects a woman's proposal on February 29, he has to give her gloves. Not one, not two, but 12 pairs of gloves.

A tradition in Finland exists that if a man rejects a woman's proposal on February 29, he must give that woman loads of fabric so that she can make herself a new skirt.

Ways To Celebrate Leap Day

Leap day gives you extra 24 hours from your normal 365 days to use it as you may please.

Some people like to relax in a spa, some like to make the most of it and go out for soccer matches, some like to go on adventures and long drives, and some like to sit at home and watch movies. There are numerous ways to celebrate the leap day.

While choosing what to do on a leap day, remember you have one whole extra day and decide what activity would make you happy.

Facts And Stats

Historically, women were allowed to propose for marriage on a leap day.

People whose birthdays fall on a leap day are called leapers or leaplings.

Women proposing men tradition on the leap day began in Scotland in 1288.

What is the significance of leap day?

The leap year helps us synchronize human-made calendars to the actual rotation of the earth around the Sun (solar year) and the passing of seasons around the world.

Why does February have less days?

Roman calendar, unlike the Gregorian calendar, had only 10 months. Thus to synchronize both the calendars and make it easier for the society to follow the calendar, Numa Pompilius, a Roman King, added two extra months.

For an even number of months with 30-31 days alternately, the addition was even, but the King wanted it to be odd so that addition (Number of days in a year) would be odd.

Why was February chosen for the leap year?

The Roman King Numa, wanted the number of days to be odd, which could only happen if one of the months had lesser days. He selected this month for Romans to be unlucky and to perform traditions and rituals on the dead.

What is the history and origin of leap day?

Julius Caesar originated the leap year while creating a calendar to synchronize the rotation of the earth around the Sun perfectly.

What is unique about leap day?

Technically, a leap day is adding 0.25 days that the earth takes to rotate around the Sun.
