One of the weirdest facts about the University of Maryland campus is that it hosted troops from both the Union and the Confederate states during the Civil War. This was when the battalions required a place to camp.
The dining halls and residence halls that were meant for the students served the troops adequately.
It is speculated that the Confederates were also housed in the campus since some of the administrators of the campus at the time sympathized with them. It is natural that this may have been a cause for great speculation back in the day!
The university campus also suffered a severe fire, which is speculated to have started from a faulty electrical circuit. The fire that started from just one building on the campus soon gained a lot of impetus and ended up spreading to all but one building.
The students and faculty tried their best to extinguish the fire but their efforts weren't enough to quell the situation. Even the fire department of Maryland couldn't do much more than evacuate all the students and staff.
Fortunately, there were no casualties. The one building that survived the fire, Morris Hall, stands to this day and is the oldest building on the campus!
The founder of The Muppets, Jim Henson, graduated from the University of Maryland. He studied in the graduate school of home economics.
