Nocturnal lagophthalmos is the name given to the medical condition of keeping one's eyes open. As per research, up to 20% of the population can be affected by this condition. One of the causes behind nocturnal lagophthalmos could be issues with the nervous system or muscles, which make it difficult for a person to close their eyes completely.
Nocturnal lagophthalmos is also caused by skin problems all around the eyelids. People's eyes could indeed dry out if they keep their eyes exposed while sleeping. Without adequate lubrication, the eyelids are more prone to infection and can become scuffed and disrupted. Most people realize that they have been sleeping with their eyes open because a partner or friend tells them so. Some people sleep with their eyes open frequently. However, that does not mean you can wake them. Their brain and muscles have a serious disorder. A healthy person who can sleep properly and wake up in the morning with quality sleep may not know how this practice can lead to dryness in the eye.
