When we think of deadly fish, our instinct compels us to imagine huge sharks that can chew us whole in one bite, but the truth is, most of the deadly fishes are actually also some of the smallest fish.

Some fish contain enough poison to kill their prey in less than an hour, while others can fatally injure an adult. In fact, every year, approximately 24,000 fishermen die from injuries or poisonous fits caused by aquatic life.

People around the world depend on products made from fish for their food, livelihood, and much more. The mesmerizing beauty of aquatic life is the highlight of aquariums, and people travel across countries to experience the pleasure of enjoying the beauty of marine life.

However, the dark side of fish is something most people are not prepared for. From a dreaded attack on humans to delivering life-taking poisons, marine life is capable of it all.

Do you ever wonder which fish to run away from on a beach vacation? Read this article to know all about the most dangerous species of fish in the world.

If you thought the piranha was probably the most dangerous fish to a human, then think again. There are fish in many a river like the electric eel that could shock humans multiple times to cause heart or respiratory failure.

What is more likely, though, is that, unlike the moray eel, which is a non-aggressive eel (albeit scary-looking), the electric eel can shock a human enough to stun them underwater, resulting in them drowning.

What makes a fish dangerous?

Sharks such as a tiger shark or a great white shark can eat a human being whole in just a few bites. Another possibility that makes them extremely dangerous is that in a group they are able to eat their prey in the water in a very short period.

Sharks only really attack humans when they are confused or curious, which leads to unintended accidental attacks. Sharks actually fear humans.

The piranha very frequently attacks local fishers and their boats in several of the major South American basins. They are well known for their aggressive appetites and sharp teeth, as people witnessed in the movie 'Piranha', among countless other movies about piranhas.

This fish is attracted to the smell of blood. They are surely a fish most of us would love to avoid!

Poisonous fishes like spotfin lionfish propose another type of danger. The body of a lionfish is entirely poisonous.

Its brown and white stripes, along with its long pectoral fins, seem to shout; 'don't touch me'! The silent killer attacks its prey by expelling its venom through the eight sharp fins it possesses and causes an extremely painful sting. This sting can cause a human to faint due to the pain, and also causes respiratory problems.

The Most Dangerous Fish In The Sea

There are roughly over 80 species of moray eels that live in shallow water and are found in tropical and subtropical areas. Moray eels are different from other eels, such as electric eels, as they lack pectoral fins and have jaws equipped with sharp teeth, which can cause serious wounds on their enemies, including human beings.

A moray eel is about 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) in length, with certain exceptions.

Moray eels can easily camouflage and cause a bite much more painful than the bite of other predatory fishes. A moray eel, just an electric eel cannot be tamed by humans and it's important to maintain distance when near the water.

Red lionfish are known for their venomous fin spines, which are capable of creating painful puncture wounds. There are several fish species with distinctive patterns, such as bearlike, zebralike, and other varieties of stripes.

Red lionfish have dorsal fins that help them attack humans. As quoted by the victims, the lionfish sting can be very painful and cause severe nausea.

To get relief from a red lionfish sting, you can soak the affected area in hot water, and then seek immediate medical attention as some people may be sensitive to the venom. In most scenarios, a lionfish sting is not fatal.

The white shark is publicly feared for unprovoked fatal attacks on humans. White shark bites may cause serious organ damage and may lead to death.

These aggressive predators with extremely muscular bodies are found in the Indo-Pacific region and are highly migratory. The great white shark is approximately 20 ft (609.6 cm) long and tops the world's most dangerous fish list for it's many victims over the years and the research undertaken about this creature.

Stonefish holds the title of the most dangerous fish in the ocean that contains venom. They are often found in the muddy bottoms of the Indo-Pacific region.

You can swim right by a stonefish without even noticing because of its camouflaging nature.

However, if you step on a stonefish, thinking it to be a harmless stone, it will pop up its sharp spines and release venom from two sacks at the base of each spine.

There might have been only a few deaths from the sting of a stonefish, but victims have compared the stonefish sting to being hit with a sledgehammer, which sounds quite painful.

A barracuda is a large predatory fish famous for its fearsome appearance and being one of the most dangerous saltwater species of fish. Some barracudas are found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea, but mainly barracudas reside near the top of the water and also near coral reefs.

They are snake-like in appearance with fang-like razor-sharp teeth, much like piranhas.

Their two dorsal fins are separated, with the anterior fin having five spines. They are a threat if you are planning to go for a relaxing swim as they are reportedly very dangerous for swimmers who have reported bites and attacks, although such incidents are rare.

Manta rays are approximately 29 ft (883.92 cm) long and weigh up to two tons (1814 kg). Their body is often kite-shaped, also known as 'devil rays' because of their two horn-like flaps in the mouth.

Manta rays might be the largest rays, but in most cases, they are harmless.

They are often mistaken as stingrays that were the reason for the death of Steve Irwin, but unlike stingrays, manta rays don't have stinging tails, teeth, or bards. While they might not be poisonous or might not sting you, it's always advisable to stay vigilant around large animals like manta rays because accidents can leave both parties injured.

The Most Dangerous Fish In Freshwater

Tigerfish are named so because of their hostility and fierceness, which resembles a tiger. They are found in African freshwaters. There are about five species of tigerfish, with the longest of them being six ft (182.88 cm) with a long dagger-like mouth.

Fishermen have lost fingers because of tigerfish attacks in many reported victim records. There is also proof of tigerfish attacks on children and adults, which surely makes them a dangerous breed. So the lesson learned is to stay away from tigers and tigerfish!

The most recent case of a candiru attack was in 1997, where a Brazilian urologist claimed to have removed a candiru from a patient's urethra.

Also known as vampire fish, candiru is a species of small and lean parasitic freshwater fish originally found in the Amazon Basin. It is a tiny but long fish, approximately 6.6 in (17 cm) long, with a belly that can appear distended after a blood meal and a tiny head!

Easily found in shallow waters, candiru attacks on humans are still heard of, but most lack evidence.

Catfish are found in freshwaters of the southern United States and are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. The name comes from their barbel's prominent resemblance to cat whiskers.

They have one of the greatest ranges in sizes and species as they vary from 3.9-5.2 ft (118.8-158.4 cm) in length, depending on the particular species they belong to. All catfish possess a strong, hollow, bony leading spine-like ray on their dorsal and pectoral fins.

Many catfish species have stings that are non-venomous and, in most cases, embedded in their fins. Reports, sometimes, suggest otherwise.

Stings from striped eel catfish can actually be fatal. This catfish has a serrated venomous spine on the dorsal fin and one on each pectoral fin that can be struck upright and can cause immense pain and even a fatality; hence precaution is a must when around such fish.

The Most Dangerous Fish In The World

Sharks are one of the most dangerous fish in the Caribbean Sea, with between 30 to 70 species of shark that have attacked human boats, fishermen, and swimmers. Tiger sharks are unpredictable and have led to causing injuries as their entire skin is covered with sharp denticles, which can cause major wounds.

Contact with their skin, sharp teeth, and muscular body causes wide abrasions, heavy bleeding and can surely be fatal.

The pufferfish, also known as the swellfish, is any member of a group of about 90 species of the Tetradontidae family famous for their ability to inflate themselves so greatly with air and water that they become globular. They hold a position in the world's most dangerous fish as they are attack temperaments and poisonous.

Although the toxins found in them can take a life, we sometimes eat puffers in countries like Japan. Not to be fooled by their short length, it is better to maintain distance.

Another dangerous fish that are even more dangerous than moray eels are electric eels. Multiple shocks from the electric eel can cause severe problems, and people have been reported to drown after a quick stunning jolt.

A full-grown electric eel is known to generate about 600 volts of electricity. Intense bursts last no more than two milliseconds, and this electrical charge comes from hundreds of muscle cells that create tiny currents.

Electric eels can grow in length to eight feet (243.84 cm) and can weigh up to 44 lb (19.9 kg). So, in short, the electric eel is not the ocean friend you might be looking for!

Are fin spines so strong it can kill within minutes? The box jellyfish is one of the most dangerous fish and is venomous enough to take a life within minutes.

The marks left by its attack can stay for life, and the poison it releases affects cardiac activity. Hence, when encountered by this fish, the victim or prey experiences an extremely low heart rate and dies if medical help is not provided on time.

Did You Know...

There are more than 27 species of barracuda fish found in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Barracudas have two rows of teeth to tear through flesh and firmly capture their prey.

Among all the species of sharks, the great white shark is the largest known predatory fish in the world. Sharks rip their prey, including fish, animals, and humans, with over 300 teeth into bite-sized pieces and then swallow it whole.

The great white shark is the reason for the hundreds of unprovoked attacks on humans around the world, and is certainly not like our other aquatic ocean friends. If you ever encounter a great white shark, please maintain a safe distance!

It's said that a group of 250-500 piranhas can finish a human adult in under five minutes, provided they are hungry enough.

Piranhas attract certain types of pet lovers, but when the fish gets too big for the aquarium, they usually decide to leave them in a local river. Due to this activity, piranhas have shown up in waterways around the world, from the UK to China and further.

It is legal to keep piranhas as a fish pet in certain areas, but for obvious reasons, it's never a wise idea to release a piranha in the wild or common water as the piranhas could be invasive and pose a great threat to other fish species.

As seen, not all aquatic life is calm and picturesque. A few of them can be plausible threats to humans as they might be poisonous or attack humans. Dangerous fishes are present in fresh and saltwater; hence, we as humans must beware and take precautions at all times.
