Division is a basic operation used in maths.

Division is one of the four basic operations in maths that are addition, multiplication, and subtraction. These methods are used to create new numbers.

Division involves different numbers to function. Different numbers have different roles to play and they are given different names as well.

If we take the example of two numbers say 12 and two. Here, 12 is divided by two and we get the result as six. In this case, 12 is the dividend, and two is the divisor.

The answer that is six, is known as the quotient. To perform the division, there could be a few methods. Most of the time, the chunking method is used which is also known as the division by repeated subtraction.

Other than that, there are methods like long division and short division methods. The long division method is known as the division with remainder whereas the short division method is known as the bus stop method.

Purpose Of Division

As we know, the division method is a basic operation for calculating and creating numbers. So we can say the main purpose of division is to divide numbers equally and to calculate the number of parts that the numbers are separated into.

As we mentioned earlier, division leads to the emergence of equal parts of numbers. But we must remember that multiplication tables play a very important role to support the practice of division.

In order to obtain the quotient, the dividend is divided by the divisor following the multiplication tables. The application is not only useful to the kids but also in real life. The process is known to be helpful in adult life regarding day-to-day calculations as well.

Division Of Fractions

Before getting into the details of the division of fractions, we must have knowledge about what a fraction is. A fraction is a part of a number that has two parts, known as the numerator and the denominator.

The idea of the division of fractions is nothing but reverse multiplying. For the division problems of two fractions, say 4/5 and 16/25, the second fraction is reciprocated and then multiplied to the first fraction.

The multiplication happens following the basic multiplication or division tables. So in this case, the answer would look like 4/5 x 25/16 which would like a 5/4. So we can say that the answer, in this case, can either be a whole number or a fraction.

Euclidean Division

Euclidean division problems are basically math with a remainder. The division questions include dividing one integer with the other to get smaller results in the end. This method is alternatively known as long division.

To elaborate the process of the euclidean division, we can say that it is in practice to produce a smaller number than the divisor. In this case, the one integer or the divisors divide the other integer or the dividend.

This process is done again and again to obtain a smaller integer than the divisor. This method requires a concept of computation and the major motive is to find a greater common divisor.

Since it is a time-consuming and long process, it is alternatively known as long division. In fact, the teacher while teaching this method to their students would refer to the method as a method of long division.

Division Vs. Other Mathematical Concepts

When we talk about the mathematical concepts versus the practice of division then we enter the math games of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. While teaching maths to kids, these four concepts are considered to be the first pillar of maths.

The first of the three mathematical concepts is addition. Addition is a practice of combining and adding numbers.

This method does not require tables and is easily done by counting. The counting is either done by memorizing or by using the process of the tally mark. The second concept is subtraction.

This concept is the exact opposite of addition. In subtraction, this method also does not require tables and students practice this method to take one number away from the other. This method is also known as the method of take away.

The third mathematical concept is multiplying. This method is used to find multiples of digits.

In order to calculate multiples of larger digits, tables are made to make the process easier. These tables are used by students while performing division.

As we discuss the mathematical concepts versus division, we must conclude that the division in itself is a unique method and is not related to any of the three. Although the application of addition, subtraction, and multiplication are required during the calculation of the division.

So we can say that division is not related to the three concepts, but the application is required.

FAQs

Q. What are the three things in division?

A. The three important things while performing division are the dividends, the divisors, and the remainders.

Q. What is a division fact?

A. Division facts are basically the numbers to integers of the division sum stated in a sentence that is supposed to be related to the division tables.

Q. How can division facts be learned?

A. You can learn division facts by practicing and learning the tables.

Q. What are divisions?

A. Division is a basic mathematical concept taught to students. A method of dividing a group of things into equal parts is called division.

Q. What is a basic fact in the division?

A. There are infinite basic division facts. But to state one we must remember that the division can never be performed without dividends and divisors.

Q. What is the formula of division?

A. The formula of the division is really simple and it can be stated as 'Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient'. For example, we can write '15 ÷ 3 = 5.'
