The romantic comedy 'Sweet Home Alabama' was directed by Andy Tennant and released in 2002.
The title of the film was derived from the song by Lynyrd Skynyrd. 'Sweet Home Alabama' stars Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, Patrick Dempsey, Mary Kay Place, Fred Ward, Candice Bergen, and Jean Smart.
The film starts with young Melanie Smooter (Reese Witherspoon) and Jake Perry (Josh Lucas) in sweet home Alabama on a beach, where Jake (Josh Lucas) asserts that they will be married in the future.
Fast forward to the present, and young Melanie is a New York-based fashion designer engaged to the most eligible bachelor in the city, Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey).
She has even changed her name to Melanie Carmichael so that her Southern roots aren't detected.
After Andrew proposes, Melanie decides to make a trip to Alabama to give her parents the news and finalize her divorce from Jake (Josh Lucas), her estranged husband. A series of events take place here, including a fallout with her childhood friend, Bobby Ray Bailey and Melanie begins to learn more about Jake's life here.
When Andrew arrives and learns of Melanie's real background, the wedding is canceled, but he soon decides he still wants to be with her and the preparations go forward as planned. At the wedding, however, she realizes that she still loves Jake and lets Andrew know with a much-loved quote, "The truth is........back."
She finds Jake at the beach and lets him know her feelings, declaring that they're still married and that's what she wants.
