They are important for their supply of meat and also for their supply of milk.

According to an estimate, there are about 1.5 billion cows that are raised as livestock. They are herbivores by nature, and as such, they only eat grass, hay, and plants.

On average, a cow eats about 4-6 tonnes of forage (grass or hay) every year. Most of the beef cattle or draught cattle are fed only grass from birth.

The feed for dairy cows is fed only forage, which includes hay mostly complemented with grains, soy, and other supplements such as proteins and growth supplements.

They can eat about 40 lb or about 18 kg of grass or hay each day. Their digestive system decomposes the grass and execrates it in the form of cow dung, which is said to be a very good and natural manure for the soil.
