They are said to have lived in North and South America. The scientific name of dire wolves is Canis dirus which means ‘fearsome dog’.


The first-ever fossil of a dire wolf was found near the Ohio River in the year 1854. Dire wolves are considered to be the largest of all the canines that have existed on the planet Earth and thus were named ‘dire’ which is derived from the Latin word ‘dirus’.

The two subspecies of dire wolves were the Canis dirus dirus and the Canis dirus guildayi. These helpful sheets can also be used to learn more about dire wolves offering the kids a chance to know more interesting facts about them!
