Gollum is a fictional character first introduced in the 1937 fantasy novel 'The Hobbit'.
This fictional character evolves in the later sequel trilogy called 'The Lord of Rings'. The entire plot revolves around the one ring that symbolizes the corruption of wealth and power.
Gollum in 'The Hobbit' was born Sméagol. He once used to live above on the land.
However, upon the possession of 'The Ring', he prefers to stay under the ground to guard his precious ring. His name changed from Sméagol to Gollum because of the habit of making a weird swallowing noise in his throat.
Gollum loses the ring, which falls into the hands of Bilbo. Gollum engages Bilbo with riddles to assess him and later finds that Bilbo is his equal in answering them.
