The fictional character Smeagol was first introduced in the novel 'The Hobbit' in 1937 by the author, J. R. R. Tolkien.
Smeagol was at first a Stoor (one of the three early Hobbit-types) portrayed as monstrous in the book and the movie. Later, this character gains importance in the sequel 'The Lord of the Rings' as well.
Known initially as River-folk Hobbit, Gollum was called 'Smeagol' at first. Later, he gets corrupted by one ring, and his name comes to being as 'Gollum'. The name is 'Gollum' because of the horrendous noise he makes in his throat while swallowing.
One of the most famous lines that Gollum says is "Precious, precious, precious! ", referring to the ring. The ring extends his life span beyond natural timelines.
Peculiarly, Gollum appears to speak to himself very frequently and when he speaks to others, he refers to himself in the third person. We can also find him referring to himself as "my precious" many times.

Smeagol Quotes In 'The Hobbit'
Smeagol was a great survivor, had a very keen eye, and was also an excellent fisherman. Although he was not a very good hobbit, he wasn't evil initially.
His needs were pretty basic. The depiction of his past identity helps us analyze the character before he sees the ring. Subsequently, his behavior spirals into destructive making him a thief, liar, murderer, among others after his obsession starts with possessing the ring to fulfill his goals.
He starts to believe he cannot survive without the ring. Here are some of the interesting quotes from 'The Hobbit'.

'Lord Of The Rings' Smeagol Quotes
The role of Gollum is played by Andy Serkis and this film manages to take the graphics a notch up. Up until that point, there were a lot of graphics used to show creatures on the screen along with other actors but in this film, the technology that brought Gollum to life won the CGI team an Oscar.

Smeagol has a friend of a similar sort, Deagol, who is sharp-eyed but not as quick as Smeagol. One day, as they go fishing, Deagol finds a gold ring in the river and Smeagol notices this and says to Deagol "Give us that, Deagol, my love".
When Deagol questions why, Smeagol responds by saying "Because it's my birthday, my love, and I wants it".
