UN Chinese Language Day was first celebrated on November 12, 2010, but after that, the celebration is held on April 20 every year.
The United Nations public information department came up with the UN Chinese Language Day in 2010.
Cangjie is credited with being the person who, about 5,000 years ago, invented the Chinese characters. There are also myths and beliefs about gods raining grains on the land when Cangjie finished this work. Here is a timeline of some important events that followed this day.
The UN started UN Chinese Language Day to honor multilingualism and the diversification of culture. They aimed at promoting and establishing equality between the six languages used throughout the UN organizations, where Chinese is included. On the other hand, the day is used to honor Cangjie, a significant Chinese personality.
Use this day as an opportunity to learn some Chinese. Then, if you like, you can continue learning it.
Visit a nearby Chinese restaurant and enjoy some Chinese dishes.
You can even use this day to watch some Chinese movies, either dubbed or with subtitles. Enjoy it however you want.
