About Book of Dust

What is The Book of Dust about?

Along with their dæmons, the story follows two young people (Malcolm and Alice) in the middle of a terrifying manhunt. Lyra Belacqua, a tiny child, is in their care during this manhunt.

This child is said to have the future in her hands. As the water rises around them, their powerful rivals plot to obtain mastery of Dust, which is a mode for corruption for many and redemption for others.

Pullman pulls philosophical, religious, and scientific ideas into his books, and this is certainly evident in this adaptation.

The story is a prequel to the His Dark Materials trilogy (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) and is set 12 years before the events of the Northern Lights (published in 1995). This story is based on the first volume of the Book of Dust trilogy by Phillip Pullman.

La Belle Sauvage means 'the beautiful savage' or 'the wild beauty' in English.

Adapted brilliantly for the stage, Bryony Lavery has made many notable contributions to the theatre industry, basing some productions on known novels.
