About 'A Monster Calls'

What is 'A Monster Calls' about?

Based on the novel by writer Patrick Ness and made by the visionary director Sally Cookson, the show is heavily inspired by one of Siobhan Dowd's ideas. Now get an inner view of life, love, and healing with the story of Conor and the monster at the Rose Theatre, Kingston.

The story is based on a 13-year-old boy, Conor O'Malley who lives with his mum. He and his mother have done well getting by after his dad moved away.

However, the story takes a turn for the worse as his mom gets sick and does not get any better. Conor and his grandmother have nothing in common and she starts to get involved in everything. Even the kids in school won't look Conor in the eye.

Conor, while sleeping one night, gets woken up by something in the window. It is a monster that has arrived after walking for ages.

The monster is at the window to tell Conor of tales when he once walked all over. After, it is now Conor's time to encounter his deepest fears and tell his own stories with the monster's help. It is how he will be able to find peace and his stories are on a thin line between reality and imagination.

At 12:07 a.m., the monster calls on the window of Conor's room. Watch this show to understand the significance of this specific time of the call. The monster is tall with branches and the leaves of a yew tree in a human form.

The themes of the story are grief and overcoming it, and family. The monster symbolizes a beacon for Conor's healing. It is not a horror story, even though it involves a monster.
