About Measure for Measure

What is Measure for Measure about?

It is 1975, and Britain is on thin ice. There is increasing inflation, an identity crisis, unemployment at an all-time high, an energy catastrophe, and political controversy. The Duke leaves London at this unfortunate time, leaving Angelo the authoritarian in power. Authoritarian Angelo and his government start policing the expression of sexual desire. Isabella, the lead character in this play, has to come out of her safe space in a convent to save her brother from death under the new laws of the justice system. Angelo asks for Isabella in return for her brother, which means that the freedom of her brother comes at the cost of her life. This is what is meant by Measure for Measure, as the new law suggests that if a crime is committed, an equal amount needs to be suffered as punishment. Watch the fight for justice in a world of extreme laws, as everything rests on a knife-edge. Justice and mercy are at the centre of the story.

Thrilling suspense and sharp wit abound in this dark comedy about the corruption of power. The production is genuine, and the fight for justice and freedom is accurate. As the new laws on sexual freedom sentence Isabella's brother to death, it is on her to find a solution in this dark comedy by Shakespeare.
