About Cyrano De Bergerac

What is Cyrano de Bergerac about?

After the successful run of Cyrano de Bergerac in 2019 that won an Olivier Award, the show is back at the West End for a limited run at the Harold Pinter Theatre. In the play by Edmond Rostand, James McAvoy is back to play the character of the brilliant writer in this freshly adapted production by Martin Crimp.

The play Cyrano de Bergerac is based on the life of a 17th-century French writer, Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac. Edmond Rostand made this play after being inspired by the life of this writer.

It was performed in the year 1897. Martin Crimp gives new life to this play by making it relevant to modern times. With world-class performers, the drama is electric at the theatre, and this classic play is able to immerse every visitor.

The story revolves around Cyrano de Bergerac, an author who is great with words and a notorious sword-fighter. He can do anything except find a girl for himself. He can't even tell Roxane about his feelings as he is concerned about his abnormally large nose.

Roxane loves words, and when Cyrano gets a chance to write love letters to her, he takes the opportunity with open arms. He writes poetry in the name of his friend (Christian). The real question is, will he ever be able to reveal his true self?

The nose symbolises a barrier between him and his love life. It is a romantic tragedy. The genre is comedy and romantic.

Cyrano de Bergerac reveals the story of loving from afar. Cyrano de Bergerac is produced by Jamie Lloyd Company (a partnership between the artistic director Jamie Lloyd and the Ambassador Theatre Group).

During its 2019 run, Cyrano de Bergerac's lead actor, James McAvoy, was nominated for 'Best Actor' at the Olivier Awards. The play was nominated for five Olivier Awards, and they won the 'Best Revival of a Play' award.
