Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire is an absolute must-visit for all families, particularly in the summer. This isn’t your average walk in the park, instead, there’s over 160 acres of luscious, rolling green land for you and the kids to explore.

Not to mention the incredible routes for walks around the forest, and the interesting history and heritage.

A Kidadler favourite, Ewloe Castle has an epic playground perfect for little tots, a tumbling waterfall bound to leave your kids wide-eyed and even a Visitor Centre which dates all the way back to the seventh century.

Located in the picturesque Connah’s Quay, Flintshire in Wales, Wepre Park makes for the perfect day trip for those living in Wales or those who have decided to embrace the staycation life and head West to the quay for the summer!

There's loads to do there, however, there are some absolutely unmissable attractions at Wepre Park; whether you’ve got active kids or budding historians, there really is something for the whole family to enjoy!

One of the more popular attractions at Wepre Park, at the Visitor Centre (also known as Wepre Old Hall) you can learn all about the history and heritage of Wepre Park and the centre and immerse yourself in seventh-century Wales.

Stumped amidst woodland and forest, Ewloe Castle is highly unique and is definitely worth a visit whilst you're roaming the park. Having reopened in line with the government’s guidance about coronavirus, Ewloe Castle is free to visit and doesn’t require you to pre-book.

All they ask is that you keep the two metre distance and do not meet up in large groups of over six. Ewloe Castle was actually first built deliberately as a statement to the English invaders to prove that it belonged to Wales!

Hard to miss are The Red Rocks. Once used at the foundations of Ewloe Castle, this is a great spot to explore on a walk through the park. Distinct by their red colour, budding geologists will love seeing these sedimentary rocks up close and personal!

No park is complete without a playground, and Wepre Park is no exception! With a fully equipped play area where your little ones can roam free and unleash even more adventure, as well as a skate park for older ones, there’s endless entertainment to get involved in. Plus, there's 160 acres of open space, perfect for walks.

In fact, Wepre Park is also full of unique walking routes that will give you a chance to spot plenty of wildlife and nature. Pick up a park map to select a route which best suits you and your family and get your walking shoes on.

Another impressive feature is the waterfall. Originally built to help drive a turbine which generated heaps of electricity for the Old Hall, it’s a must-see and features on many of the walking routes.

What to know before you go

• Wepre Park is wheelchair and buggy friendly, with its long stretches of land and slopes as opposed to stairs, it’s super accessible. However, Ewloe Castle is on a small hill so keep that in mind.
• The Old Hall Cafe (Wepre Park Cafe) is great for a quick snack. We recommend enjoying some ice cream here: A single scoop is just £2.30 and a double is £3.50!
• We also recommend bringing a picnic. That way you can dine within the woodlands, amongst nature and avoid any additional stresses caused by fussy eating habits that could prevail when out to eat.
• There are toilets and baby-changing facilities in the park, ideal for the whole family to use.
• Wepre Park opening times stay the same all year round and it's open 24 hours a day.
• Be sure to pick up a Wepre Park map when you arrive.

Getting there

• If you're driving, follow signs for the car park. Parking at Wepre Park is free whilst you’re visiting the park but can get pretty busy on weekends and bank holidays. Our top tip is to frequently check the ‘Friends of Wepre Park' page on Facebook as they often give updated information as to the availability of the car park and what the parking situation is likely to be over busy periods!
• To get to Wepre Park via public transport is super easy. Hop on the number 10 bus headed to Wepre and get off at Boathouse Inn, Golftyn. From there, it’s around an 18-minute walk until you arrive at the park.
• If you’d rather take the train, the closest stations to Wepre Park are Shotton, Hawarden Bridge, Buckley and Flint and are all less than a 15-minute drive away.
