They have a body length of around 4 ft (122 cm) and weight around 300 lb (136 kg), and this turtle species is among the largest hard-shelled sea turtles that are present in the world. The carapace color is in the shades of yellow, brown, along with light brown streaks to black, while their plastron color is light yellow.

When they mature, as adults, they eat algae and seagrass because of which their fat layer becomes green. They can stay underwater for many hours; their lungs are two-thirds as long as their carapace.

The longest recorded downtime of them underwater is five hours.

These animals have been listed as an endangered species in the USA, which generally refers to being a federal offense to harm them. They are protected to avoid their extinction in the future.
