Gaulish Place Names

Place names sometimes took the place of last names in Gaul. This is a list of last names that are also names of actual locations of former Gaul regions.

These regions were found across Europe and are also sometimes described as Celtic regions. In these areas, most people spoke the common Celtic languages which have now developed into other modern languages.

A Greek geographer, Hecataeus of Miletus, was one of the first to refer to people in these regions as Celts, which is how the name came about.

Now, these areas are no longer known as Gaul but have been broken up and are now parts of different countries. These places are now found in what we know and refer to as Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and more.

The legacy of the Gaul naming system and way of living can still be seen in some of these parts of Europe. Most European languages have been influenced by the original Celtic languages, and many names that are popular today have roots in these parts.
