The Cavanese dog is a miniature mixed breed dog bred from purebred parents, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Havanese. This dog breed is a unique blend of gracefulness and versatility.

It is believed that the breed dates back to the '80s. Havanese dogs are the descendants of the Bichon family and are of Cuban origin.

The Havanese breed has been even proclaimed as the national dog of Cuba!

On the other hand, the history of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dates back to the 17th century, when the families of monarchs patronized the breed. The name of the breed, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was attributed to these dogs in correspondence to the patronage that was heaped on these dogs by King Charles I of England.

Some of the traits, like a love for children, imbibed by the Cavanese are an extension of the traits common to both its parent breeds. These dogs are perfect for families with children and other pets.

Would they make a good pet?

To decide if the Cavanese would fit in well as a good pet dog for your family, you need to be aware of the pros and cons of the breed and judge accordingly. Knowledge of the dog's temperament, traits, and daily requirements is necessary before planning to adopt one, and importantly you must learn all about Cavanese health requirements.

Cavanese dogs are ideal pets for small spaces like apartments. To top that, they are affectionate and make great family dogs owing to their pet-friendly and child-friendly nature.

The breed comes with a gentle and sweet temperament and is always eager to please. With proper social training, they can get on well with strangers, too. Therefore, lots of training, daily exercise, grooming, and a healthy diet form the basic requirements of the breed.

These dogs need daily exercise for at least half an hour. Since the Cavanese is a small breed, it must be noted that exercise regimes must not be too tiresome for the dog.

These dogs are very easy to train due to their obedience and diligence. However, a Cavanese puppy is more receptive to training than an adult dog, so it is important to begin training young.

Training and exercise regimes need not be just regular sprinting or rigorous workouts. It can be a fun-filled game of fetch or hide and seek.

Additionally, these dogs require occasional grooming. Grooming includes a bath once or twice a month, brushing and cleaning the coat (to keep the coat dirt and tangle-free), cleaning of the ears and teeth, trimming the nails, and eye checkups.

Like any other dog breed, these dogs are prone to certain health issues. Since the breed has been developed from cross-breeding the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Havanese, they bear the threat of inheriting the health problems common to both purebred parent breeds.

These dogs are prone to eye infections, Legg-Calve Perthes, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, mitral valve disease, skin problems, chondrodysplasia, heart conditions, deafness, ear problems, and a few other health issues.

Moreover, they can be emotionally fragile and can suffer from separation anxiety, especially when isolated for long hours.

Owners must bear in mind that these dogs are ultra-sensitive and cannot stand separation for prolonged hours. To avoid separation anxiety, it is best to only adopt a Cavanese puppy if there will be people in your home for the majority of the day.

This dog breed has been attributed several other names such as the Havalier, the Cavalier Havanese mix, or the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Havanese mix.

This adored pet has not been recognized by the major kennel clubs like the American Kennel Club (AKC), since it is not purebred. However, other clubs like the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Dog Registry of America, and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club have offered identification to this small dog breed.

The cost of a Cavanese puppy ranges approximately from $900 to $1,100 depending on several significant factors like location, gender, availability, the adeptness of the breeder, health quality, coat quality, and other factors. The monthly cost of maintaining a Cavanese puppy as a pet ranges from around $25 to $30.

Are Cavanese dogs hypoallergenic?

The Cavanese is not known to be hypoallergenic and the breed sheds moderately. Therefore, these dogs might not prove to be ideal for families with adults or children who are allergic to dander or dog hair.

Cavapoo vs. Cavanese

The primary distinction between the Cavanese and the Cavapoo is based on their origin history, that is the fact that one member of their parent breeds is different.

The Cavanese is the result of a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Havanese, while the parent breeds of the Cavapoo are the Poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

These hybrid breeds share a similar temperament despite their different parents.
