Hamiltonstovare Fact File

The Swedish Kennel Club (Swedish: Svenska Kennelklubben) is an organization of dog breeders, owners, and enthusiasts that was established all the way back in 1889 and is still going strong, with over 300,000 ordinary dog owners, around 15,000 dog breeders and over 500,000 dogs are currently registered with the organization.

The founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, Count Adolf Hamilton is credited with first breeding the Hamitonstovare (Swedish: Hamiltonstövare), also known as the Swedish foxhound or the Hamilton hound, with ancestry in the English foxhound, the typical hound, and several German hounds.

The Hamiltonstovare dog breed was bred by Count Adolf and his kennel club to hunt and thus has a very high prey drive: something to remember if you keep other smaller animals as pets too.

This Swedish hound is still quite a rare breed, with it being found in any significant amount only in Sweden and Great Britain.

It has a very well-proportioned body and looks exactly the same as perhaps the dog textbook dictates what the dog must look like.

What type of animal is a Hamiltonstovare?

The Hamiltonstovare is a very well-built and handsome dog. They look almost exactly the way you would expect a very well raised and groomed dog to look.

What class of animal does a Hamiltonstovare belong to?

The Hamiltonstovare, like all its dog cousins and wolf ancestors, is a mammal, of the biological class Mammalia. This means that the young of its species will feed on its mother milk that she produces using her mammary glands.

How many Hamiltonstovares are there in the world?

The Hamiltonsotvare or Swedish Foxhound is not found in the wild, as it is a special breed developed to hunt. A very rough estimate for its population would be around 1 million, but the number is thought to be rapidly rising, due to the increasing popularity of this breed.

Where does a Hamiltonstovare live?

The Hamilton Hound is a breed found exclusively in homes and farmsteads. This is due to the fact that it is quite a rare breed that was specially developed for its hunting capabilities, and cannot be found in the wild at all, apart from perhaps a negligible number of runaways.

What is a Hamiltonstovare's habitat?

The natural habitat of the ancestors of the Swedish Foxhound or Hamiltonstovare was grassy plains, it is now urban and rural homes across Sweden and Great Britain, where it enjoys living with its owners.

Having said this, the Hamiltonstovare would probably be able to fend for itself in the wild as well, it is just that it is a completely domesticated breed that simply does not need to do so.

Who do Hamiltonstovares live with?

The Hamiltonstovare, despite being developed to hunt prey, lives with humans in their homes. They can also live in harmony with other pets, provided they are not much smaller than them in size, as this would cause them to see the other pet as prey.

How do they reproduce?

When the male of this rare breed known as the Hamilton Hound is sure that a female is fertile (usually by sniffing her), he will mount her and thrust her to fertilize her eggs.

The mating and reproduction process of the Hamiltonstovare is identical to that of a typical hound or dog.

What is their conservation status?

Since this Swedish hound breed was specially bred to hunt, it is not under any conversation threat and is Not Listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Purebred dog breeds are very lucky to have no major external threats posed to them.

Hamiltonstovare Fun Facts

What do Hamiltonstovares look like?

The Hamiltonstovare is a very well-muscled and handsome rectangular dog breed, and those individuals with a high breed standard will have almost have a uniform coat: white snout and neck, white paws, and white tail tip, a mostly brown coat with occasional splashes of black.

It may look very similar to the English foxhound, with the only marked difference between the two being that the Hamiltonstovare has a lighter frame.

Their eyes are dark brown and give off an eternally calming aura.

It has a soft undercoat that gets especially thick during the winter to fend off the chills.

The upper coat consists almost entirely of short hairs. Their nose is entirely black with large nostrils, and receptors that can detect even the faintest of scents, a quality typical of any hound breed of dog.

Both the female and male Hamiltonstovare sport the same brown white face, neck, and tail with black patches.

How cute are they?

The Hamiltonstovare is a very cute dog breed to look at, even after it grows to its adult size from its puppy ears. Kids love to play with this specially bred dog from Sweden not only because it has plenty of energy with a friendly and brave temperament, but also because they are very handsome and patient with kids.

How do they communicate?

All dog breeds have a variety of ways of communicating with other dogs, humans, and other animals. They can use their body to signal love and affection, sometimes by exposing their belly to you to let you know they trust you.

Apart from this, they can bark, whimper, whine, and of course, the favorite of every breed of hound, they can howl to convey information about their mood and what they need at that moment.

How big is a Hamiltonstovare?

The Hamitonstovare dog breed grows to around 22 in (56 cm) tall. At this height, they stand at almost exactly the same stature as the Carolina dog and a good amount-around 5 in (13 cm) shorter than the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

How fast can a Hamiltonstovare run?

As a result of its very high prey drive, the Hamitonstovare dog breed can sprint at speeds of above 30 mph (50 km/h) when hunting prey, or even during its playtime with you. The fastest of the hound dog breeds is considered to be the greyhound, usually an additional 20 mph (32 kph) faster than the Hamiltonstovare breed.

How much does a Hamiltonstovare weigh?

A healthy adult Hamiltonstovare dog should weigh around 50-60 lb (23-27 kg). Make sure to take good care of your Hamiltonstovare dog's eating habits, since obesity is a major health issue that affects this breed, or any other dog breed for that matter.

What are the male and female names of the species?

Both male and female Hamitonstovare are referred to by the same name, but can often be called a Hamiltonstovare dog for a male, and a Hamiltonstovare bitch for females. The two have the same scientific name, obviously.

What would you call a baby Hamiltonstovare?

A baby Hamiltonstovare would be called a Hamiltonstovare puppy, cute little pets that love to play and are brimming with energy, as would be made clear by their furiously wagging tail.

What do they eat?

Remember to never disrupt the eating habits of your Hamitonstovare pet at any stage in its life, since it may lead to gastric health-related problems.

The Hamitonstovare breed is known to suffer from bloat, so make sure to feed your pet in small amounts throughout the day instead of in large amounts at once. As with any other dog, they thoroughly enjoy cooked fish, homemade meats, and commercially produced dog food (in the right amounts, of course.)

It can track down and hunt rabbits and squirrels in the wild and feed on their meat, too.

Are they slobbery?

No, the average healthy Hamiltonstovare has very well-developed mouth and jaw muscles, meaning even when they are out on a hunt in the sun, they will not drool while panting. As such, you will never have to worry about your beautiful brown, white, and black Hamiltonstovare making a mess in your room.

Would they make a good pet?

Yes, the Hamiltonstovare is a dog breed that would make an excellent pet. They do not suffer from any major health problems, the only health concern being hip dysplasia in very old age (Hip dysplasia is a condition in the hip joint that impedes the ability of a dog to move around and thus live a quality life).

The Hamiltonstövare does not shed much from its coat and requires minimal grooming. The Hamiltonstövare also has a calm and composed temperament as an adult.

They also demonstrate the same temperament when around kids, making them the perfect companion!

For those looking to get a dog for the purposes of safety, this is a good choice, due to their high alert levels, loud bark, and furiously high sprint speed. The Hamiltonstövare can also take to training very quickly.

Also, this Swedish hound is very amicable and will get along with pretty much any human or fellow dog, regardless of its breed and size. Clearly, the Hamiltonstövare breed is not so popular in Sweden without reason!

Did you know...

Due to the Hamiltonstövare dog's hunting roots and hound ancestry, it is extremely full of energy and will enjoy going out on regular walks with you. They are also as intelligent as a fox, making training them that much easier, although their stubborn nature does lead to slow results from training.

The Hamilton hound is also known to love water, and will gladly paddle around a swimming pool on a hot summer day. However, this quality may vary from individual to individual.

Are Hamiltonstovares hypoallergenic?

Due to the fact that they do not shed much of their coat and can be easily groomed by brushing twice a week, the Hamiltonstövare is not known to cause allergic reactions in people, making it a so-called hypoallergenic dog breed.

However, do not take this as a full guarantee of the breed not causing allergic reactions. Scientists have long debated the extent of truth behind certain breeds being hypoallergenic and others not, and not nearly enough scientific evidence exists to back up this theory.

Instead, it is generally agreed among the scientific community that one must fully test their reaction to any dog before deciding to live with them, so that is what we recommend, too.

Naming the Hamiltonstovare

The Hamiltonstövare name pays homage to both the Swedish Kennel Club member who first developed the breed and also the founder of the club, Count Adolf Hamilton. It is also called the Swedish hound, due to its roots in Sweden, and the Hamilton hound due to its ancestry in other breeds of the hound dog.
