The dalmatian dog is a historic breed, the actual origin of which remains unknown to date. They used to be excellent coach dogs and they draw their name from the city Dalmatia, but they are not believed to have originated in this very city.

These medium-sized, sleek-coated dogs are beautiful to look at. A dalmatian coat is unique with white skin and black spots. The energy levels of these dogs are always high, and they are extremely intelligent.

In the early USA, firefighters used horse-drawn fire engines for firefighting. Dalmatians used to run ahead of these engines to clear their path, earning them the nickname 'fire mascots'.

This breed needs a lot of exercise and training. They also cannot be left alone for long periods of time as this is a breed that needs lots of social interaction.

Why is the dalmatian called the firehouse dog?

In the United States of America, dalmatian dogs have a proud history as firehouse dogs. They were connected to firehouses for more than a century and were used regularly by fire crews.

They are called so because they used to run alongside fire engines and the primary role of these dogs was to clear the path for a fire engine to travel through. They used to run ahead of horse-drawn fire engines and they were also used to guard the firehouse equipment.
