In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver (Managing Director of Guinness Breweries) went to a party in Ireland with his fellow playmates. He argued whether the red grouse or golden plover is the fastest game bird.

Beaver was interested in finding something about the same and referred to many books, but to his surprise, there was no reference to authenticate this. He then decided there has to be a record book about prolific record-holders that can be used for fact-checking in the future.

Later, he invited fact-finding researchers Norris and McWhirter from London to put together the first 'Guinness Book Of Records;.

The first edition of the 'Guinness World Records' was published on August 27, 1955, and became a best seller in Britain. In 1956, nearly 70,000 copies were sold out in the USA.
