The Leptorhynchos is a genus of a type of herb as well as of a dinosaur. To denote a dinosaur of the Leptorhynchos genus, it is better to call it by the name of the type species to avoid confusion between the herb and the dinosaur.
Apart from the herb, the Leptorhynchos is also used to denote a Late Cretaceous dinosaur genus of the Caenagnathidae family.
The Leptorhynchos dinosaurs were discovered from the Aguja Formation of West Texas in the United States. The distribution of their fossilized specimens is also recorded from some parts of Canada and in the Dinosaur park formation of Alberta.
The species was named by four renowned paleontologists including Nicholas R.†‬Longrich, ‬Scott Clark, ‬Ken Barnes, and Larry Millar. They also have another identity called Ornithomimus elegant. The most characteristic feature of this animal was its parrot-like thin beak and long thin claws.
The Leptorhyncos is named after this characteristic identity of the animal. They predominantly occurred in the Upper Campanian Aguja Formation and only a single species called L. gaddisi has been assigned to this genus. To know more about the animal, keep on reading these facts.

Leptorhynchos Interesting Facts
How do you pronounce 'Leptorhynchos'?
The word Leptorhynchos is pronounced as 'Lep-te-rin-kos' and the literal meaning of their name is thin snout.
What type of dinosaur was a Leptorhynchos?
The Leptorhynchos denotes a herb as well as a dinosaur. The latter was a type of Saurischian dinosaur that was classified as one of the theropods. The theropods have hollow bones, which explain the light weight of these dinosaurs.
In which geological period did the Leptorhynchos roam the earth?
The Leptorhynchos lived from the Campanian stage up to the beginning of the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. Their fossils were discovered mainly by Longrich and Barnes in 2013.
When did the Leptorhynchos become extinct?
The Leptorchynchos became extinct during the transition of the Campanian stage to the Maastrichtian stage that took place around 72 million years ago.
Where did a Leptorhynchos live?
The Leptorhynchos remains were recovered from the Aguja Formation of West Texas. Their fossil fragments were also reported from Canada and southern Alberta. Their distribution ranged throughout western North America.
What was a Leptorhynchos' habitat?
The Leptorhynchos were territorial feathered animals. They had a territorial presence and preferred territorial habitats. It played a functional role in their ecosystem.
Who did a Leptorhynchos live with?
Whether the Leptorhynchos lived in a group or if it was a solitary species is unknown.
How long did a Leptorhynchos live?
It is believed, the single species of Leptorhynchos lived 72-80 million years ago. The species distribution lasted for more than eight million years on earth.
How did they reproduce?
Similar to a dinosaur's reproductive behavior, a Leptorhynchos probably reproduced by laying eggs. Apart from that, no information can be concluded about their breeding habits.
Leptorhynchos Fun Facts
What did a Leptorhynchos look like?
The Leptorhynchos was a small-sized feathered dinosaur that belonged to the Caenagnathidae family of sharp billed and long neck dinosaurs. Different species of Caenagnathids have different body sizes and beak shapes.
The shape of their beaks played a major role in their adapting and evolving processes in western North America. L. gaddisi are known from a very limited fossil collection but it is believed that they had features fairly similar to the other members of the group.
It was considered to be a flightless animal with the snout turned into a parrot-like thin beak. The slender snout of the animal came to be known as the most characteristic feature of the species later.
They also had elongated skinny claws and long necks.
By studying their fossil structure, it was assumed that these Late Cretaceous flightless animals were similar to the present-day finches. The fossil of L. gaddisi was described as a primitive turkey-sized animal.
They had a rounded chin and the bill was less upturned than its relative in Canada called L. elegans. Their mandibles were short but they were deep.
The shape of the mandibles conveyed a lot about the diet of the dinosaur. The shape of the beaks of the type species distinguished them from the other species of Caenagnathidae.

How many bones did a Leptorhynchos have?
There is no information regarding the number of bones present in the body of a Leptorhynchos. The remains of a few individuals have been recovered from their range.
How did they communicate?
There is no specific detail about their communication process. Probably they used vocalizations to communicate like other dinosaur species.
How big was a Leptorhynchos?
The Leptorhynchos size is measured to be around 5.7 ft (1.7 m). Their size was similar to the wingspan of Coloborhynchus.
How fast could a Leptorhynchos move?
The Leptorhynchos is a small flightless animal that moved with its long legs. Unfortunately, their speed is unknown.
How much did a Leptorhynchos weigh?
The weight of a Leptorhynchos is measured to be around 42 lb (19 kg).
What were the male and female names of the species?
The male and the female dinosaur do not have any specific names. Both of them are referred to as Leptorhynchos.
What would you call a baby Leptorhynchos?
The baby of a Leptorhynchos species is referred to as a hatchling or nestling.
What did they eat?
The Leptorhynchos was a herbivore in nature, their diet included plant matters. The shape and the depth of the dinosaur's mandibles indicate that they were more fond of tougher plants. They used to feed on more fibrous plants than their relatives.
How aggressive were they?
They were small herbivorous species that coexisted with the large animals of the Late Cretaceous period. In comparison, they were less aggressive than the others.
Did you know...
For a long time, the L. elegans was believed to be a part of the Leptorhynchos. Later due to differences in phylogeny, L. elegans got assigned to the Citipes.
What does the name Leptorhynchos mean?
Leptorhynchos is a type of genus that can be used to describe a herb species as well as a family of dinosaurs. They were found from the Aguja Formation of the United States but reports of their distribution are also recorded from other parts of North America.
Apart from L. gaddisi has been another species called L. elegans was also considered to be a part of this group. The Leptorhynchos name meaning is slender beak or more literally, it means thin snout.
The term has a Greek origin and is formed by combining two Greek words namely, laptop and rhynchos. The Greek word leptor means thin in English, rhynchos stands for beak or snout in Greek.
The combination of these two words defines the characteristic of the species of this clade. They have a synonymous identity called Ornithomimus elegant.
Elegans means elegant in Latin. The thin beak and feathered nature give the dinosaurs an elegant appearance.
How was the Leptorhynchos discovered?
The Leptorhynchos is a very newly discovered dinosaur species that supposedly lived around the Upper Campanian Aguja Formation of Texas. They were one of the members of the Caenagnathidae family of dinosaurs that were characterized by a bird-like beak and long necks.
The fossils of the single species of Leptorhynchos dinosaur called L. gaddisi were distributed throughout a vast range in North America.
Even though they are known from very scattered remains, it could be easily inferred from their remains that they were one of the North America Caenagnathids.
Nicholas R.†‬Longrich took the main initiative to discover and describe the species. In 2013, by the joint venture of four paleontologists called Nicholas R.†‬Longrich, ‬Larry Millar, ‬Ken Barnes, and Scott Clark the Caenagnathid was finally named.
