Pterospondylus is classified as a dubious genus of theropod dinosaur group whose origins can be traced back to the Late Triassic Norian period. The discovery of the type species was made in 1913-1914. Paleontologist Otto Jaekel came up with the nomenclature and, for the first time, described Pterospondylus trielbae based on a single back vertebra.

What did the Pterospondylus look like?
Protodinosaur, Pterospondylus trielbae, was first described by Otto Jaekel as a coelophysid theropod species on the basis of an isolated dorsal vertebra. Most of the assumptions, which have been based on the features of the centrum of the vertebra, have seen Pterospondylus being put in the same bracket with another Triassic species, Procompsognathus.
This has been done despite the differences in the size of the bone, with the Procompsognathus bone being half the size of the corresponding vertebra.
