The discovery of the Fukuititan specimen revealed a lot. This dinosaur was named based on the location the specimen was found (Titan from Fukui prefecture) and the type 'F. nipponensis' means ‘from Japan’. 125 million years ago these dinosaurs inhabited the island, falling within the early cretaceous age.
Fukuititan nipponensis was a type of sauropod but smaller than its cousins. Based on this classification, it was regarded as a herbivore. To access plants, these dinosaurs evolved with long necks. Only one specimen has been discovered, based on which the characteristics of this dinosaur were ascribed by researchers.
Fukuititan is pronounced as 'Fu-ku-e-ty-tan'.
Fukuititan nipponensis was a type of basal titanosauriform sauropod dinosaurs.
Paleontologists believe that these sauropods roamed the earth during the Barremian stage (129.4 to 125 million years ago) of the early cretaceous epoch.
This titanosauriform sauropod would have become extinct by the end of the Barremian stage of the early cretaceous period.
The fossils of the Fukuititan were discovered from the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry (type locality), Barremian terrestrial sandstone, Kitadani Formation, Japan.
Fukuititan nipponensis was a terrestrial or ground-dwelling dinosaur. It is not known if they were territorial.
Fukuititan may have lived with other sauropods, Fukuisaurus (hadrosaur), the Fukuiraptor (megaraptoran theropod), Psittacosaurus, dromaeosaurs, and ornithopod dinosaurs.
Researchers are yet to reveal this fact.
This early cretaceous dinosaur from Japan would have reproduced by laying eggs.
Compared to other sauropods, Fukuititan nipponensis was a smaller species. Researchers believe this was an adaptation to survive in a smaller landmass. Their form was spherical. Based on the features, this dinosaur was classed as a basal member of the titanosaur. We don't know if they were slimy.
Fukuititan nipponensis holotype (FPDM-V8468) includes a partial skeleton. The body fossil (3D) included teeth (3); cervical arches (2); caudal vertebrae (3); both humeri, radii, and ischia; partial scapula; right metacarpal; and partial right femur. We don't know how strong their tooth was.
The communication style of these sauropods has yet to be described.
The estimated size of the Fukuititan nipponensis was 32.8 ft (10 m). They were much bigger than Fosterovenator.
The speed by which the Fukuititan moved has not been described.
The dinosaur's weight is not known.
They will be referred to as adults.
The baby would be referred to as a juvenile.
The nature of these sauropods still needs to be defined. We don't know if they would have bitten.
Fukuititan is the first known sauropod discovered in Japan.
