Vahiny facts are fascinating!

Excavated from the depths of the ‬Maevarano Formation in northwestern Madagascar, Vahiny dates back to around 70-66 million years during the Maastrichtian period of the Late Cretaceous. The specimen was discovered along with the titanosaur, Rapetosaurus.

Although the genus was constructed with the help of a braincase only, it was a groundbreaking discovery. Paleontologists have deciphered characteristics unique to this prehistoric Earth dweller and are still hopeful of uncovering more fossil specimens for the benefit of scientific research.

In 2014, the genus was named and described by Jeffrey A. Wilson and Kristina Curry Rogers. Research shows that the dinosaur coexisted with the Rahonavis, Majungsaurus, and Masiakasaurus.

However, the social relationship among these dinosaurs is shrouded in mystery. In fact, it is believed that the Majungsaurus posed a major threat for the Vahiny as well as Rapetosaurus because both were herbivore sauropods and perhaps had to survive predation.
