Ruth Marianna Handler, the famous American toy manufacturer who invented the Barbie doll, died at 85 on April 27. She was the proud owner of one of the largest toy-manufacturing companies in the world, Mattel, that has sold billions of toys across the globe.

Archer John Porter Martin, a British chemist who won the 1952 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for inventing partition chromatography, passed away on July 28 at the age of 92.

October 30 witnessed the sad demise of the American hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay, who died by gunshot.

At the age of 53, Bob Wallace died on September 20, 2002. By March 11, Rudolph Hell lived long enough to see the growth of the Internet era and died at the age of 101.
