Florida is not only a famous holiday destination, but it is also home to many famous universities.

Florida state, which is also known as the Sunshine State, is famous for its oranges, beaches, and the Florida Keys. It is a group of tropical islands 120 m (193.12 km) long near the southern tip of the US in the Atlantic ocean.

Florida is home to the world-famous Disney character, Mickey Mouse, and is also home to top-ranked universities. This article discusses one such university, Florida State University.

History Of Florida State University

Florida State University originated almost two centuries ago, in 1853. It is a public land grant research university. Florida State University is in Tallahassee, Florida, on the east coast of the US.

The state university's history goes way back to the 19th century and is inexplicably linked to Florida's history of education and education in Tallahassee. The university's origins can be traced to the West Florida Seminary, also called the Florida State Seminary.

In its early days, Florida state-funded the West Florida seminary. In the year 1858, the West Florida seminary absorbed the Tallahassee female academy and thus became a coeducational institution.

It has been officially named an eminent research university by the Florida legislature. The school's philosophy of learning is firmly rooted in the tradition of the liberal arts.

It is sometimes referred to as a doctoral university. It consists of sixteen separate colleges and 110 aggregate schools. There are two campuses for this university; the main campus is in Gainesville, Tallahassee, and the other campus is in Panama City.

The university's library plays a pivotal role in distance education and is also digitalized. It is a state-of-the-art library with a unique express delivery service.

The Claude Pepper Library is a repository of his speeches, memoirs, audio/video recordings, and documentaries about Senator Claude Pepper. The Strozier Library is named after the state university's sixth president, Dr. Robert Manning Strozier, one of its illustrious presidents. It is a three-story building with a massive collection of digital resources, books, state-of-the-art internet facilities, and comfortable study spaces.

Although its façade is historic, the interior is both modern and hi-tech. It even has its own Starbucks outlet!

Dodd Hall is a heritage museum showcasing Florida State University's colorful heritage. Its beautiful stained glass windows depict the essential traditions, tell stories about its faculty and evolution of the university, and were created by students. Dodd Hall is situated on the Tallahassee campus.

Florida State University Majors

Florida State University offers a wide range of subjects to choose from, across all forms of disciplines, the arts, sciences, and law.

The university is well-known for its engineering and law departments. A notable personality in the State University alumni is James C Smith, the former attorney general and former state secretary of Florida.

Among the majors offered are criminal justice, computer information systems, international relations and affairs, psychology (general), finance (general), marketing and marketing management (general), English language and literature (general), political science and government (general), biology and biological Sciences (general), social sciences like human development and family studies (general).

The university's Criminology and Criminal Justice undergraduate program deals with the many facets of criminal justice, empowering students to achieve their career goals. Their faculty members are considered America's top criminology faculty, and the topmost in the world.

The Research Center at the School of Law acts as the law library to train students to produce sophisticated and cost-effective legal research.

There are various disciplines in engineering that are trending at the Panama City campus of Florida State University. The trending disciplines in engineering situated both on the main campus and the Panama City campus are civil engineering, computer engineering, and electrical engineering.

The Dirac science library is located among the university's science and math buildings. It has individual study rooms and large air-media displays for group projects. It has books with the latest information in life sciences.

It provides students with study areas and computers. Materials for teaching can be obtained from this College of Engineering library.

Other trending majors taught in graduate school include elementary education, dietetics, Asian studies with emphasis on business studies, and English education. Other courses include entrepreneurship and all its various fields, exercise physiology, food and nutrition science, and geosciences.

Another relatively recent addition to the university's undergraduate program is its art section dealing with fine arts and visual arts like theater, dance, and a facility for art research. In the arts program, there is an Honors program if you decide to take up majoring in arts.

Florida State University Ranking

University ranking is calculated based on 17 measures of academic quality, including graduation and retention rates, graduation rate performance, undergraduate academic reputation, and other factors.

Florida State University is ranked 71st among the undergraduate teaching schools in the country. Globally, the University is ranked at #223 in the Best Global Universities list, beating universities such as the Universities of Chicago and California.

A university in the US becomes a Tier 1 university based on the US News Best College National University ranking. Florida State University is a Tier 1 university.

Florida State University is ranked 55 in the National Universities. The school is ranked 27 among homeland security, law enforcement, and firefighting schools. It is the best school to learn criminal law, engineering, human sciences, and social sciences, and courses on higher education.

Admissions Process For Florida State University

Spring, Summer, and Fall are the three semesters in the academic calendar at Florida State University (FSU). The year begins with the Fall semester.

Freshmen applying to FSU should have a minimum high school GPA of 3.5. The minimum SAT score is 1080. An ACT score of 22 is also fine.

Since classes begin in the Fall semester, a student wishing to enroll has to start their application process in February. Each semester has a fresh set of timetables. The Fall semester begins in August and goes on till the first week of December.

January sees the start of the Spring semester and continues until April, ending with the spring break in mid-March. Classes for the Summer semester students at the university start towards the end of May and end in July.

Selection Rate Of Florida State University

This university has a whopping number, approximately 2500, of enrolled international students from around 130 countries. Besides the undergraduate admissions, Florida State University also has many international exchange students and students with Fulbright scholarships.

Florida State University's acceptance rate was around 32.5% in 2020. Based on the acceptance rate data from previous years, this year's is projected to be around 39%.

What this means is that gaining admission into this college is highly competitive. As it is one of the best colleges in the country, it is little wonder that achieving a place is very difficult.
