On April 15, 1770, Joseph Priestly accidentally came across a vegetable gum that proved to be very effective in erasing pencil marks. Later on, April 15 was observed as National Eraser Day. Before 1770, people used bread to erase charcoal marks.

Charles Goodyear was the first person to discover vulcanization. Thus, he turned vegetable wax into a durable material and increased the standard of rubber erasers as a product.

Hyman Lipman was the first person to attach a tiny piece of rubber to the bottom of a pencil and register a patent for this product.

Invention Of Chemical Ink Erasers

Pelikan, a German manufacturer, invented a chemical ink eraser in 1930. It was introduced to the public in 1972 under the name Tintentiger. Its only drawback was that it could only erase royal blue ink.

Arthur Dremel was the first person to use a motor and a cylindrical rubber substance to create the first electric eraser in the world.
