History Of The Atlanta Braves Team

In the timeline of baseball history, the Atlanta Braves occupy a pretty big position. The team was created in 1871, although the name was different.

The Braves, along with the Chicago Cubs, are the two standing charter franchises in MLB history. During the years 1991-2005, the Atlanta Braves managed to win 14 consecutive division titles, along with creating records in pitching. The success is intrinsically linked to Bobby Cox, who was tied to team management for about 25 years and finally retired in 2010.

When the team was first started, it quickly became a charter member of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NABBP), and it had hired two of the most popular players, Al Spalding, a pitcher, and Ross Barnes, a second baseman.

The first game in the National League was played on April 22, 1876, and the team won against the Philadelphia Athletics with a 6-5 score.

The first home games were played in the Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium during 1966-1996.

It was then changed to Turner Field during 1997-2016. However, since 2017, home games are arranged at Truist Park.

Former Names Of The Atlanta Braves

One of the interesting things about the Atlanta Braves is that the team wasn't always associated with Atlanta, Georgia. The first name of this professional baseball team had been the Boston Red Stockings.

Later, the team changed its name to the Boston Braves, but it was also known by the names of Boston Red Caps, Boston Bees, Boston Doves, Boston Rustlers, Miracle Braves, Boston Red Stockings, and even the Boston Beaneaters.

The word 'braves' is said to have been first attached to the name in 1912, derived from a term for a Native American warrior. This also led to fans of the team giving it the nickname of 'bravos'.

Later, in 1953, the team moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and began to be referred to as the Milwaukee Braves.

During this time, the team used Milwaukee County Stadium as its home base.

The National League Park was another stadium where the Atlanta Braves played. When the team was sold to a Chicago-based group that was led by William Bartholomay, he wanted the Braves to have a better TV audience, and the opportunity seen from a city like Atlanta had this opportunity, so the move from Milwaukee was made.

However, the final destination for this team was to be Atlanta, Georgia, in 1966 and the team finally came to be known as the Atlanta Braves.

Mascots Of The Atlanta Braves

The well-known mascot of the Atlanta Braves is Blooper, who was created in 2018. However, before that, Homer the Brave was the official mascot who officially retired, and so, Blooper was made. Blooper was created through a special mascot-making machine during the Braves Fan Fest.

Some other mascots that have been seen in the Atlanta Stadium, and at other places, are Chief Noc-A-Homa, Atlanta Braves Bleacher Creature, and Rally. However, Homer the Brave was surely one of the more memorable mascots and was first introduced in 1989.

He had a baseball for a head and looked quite similar to Mr. Met, the mascot of the New York Mets. On the other hand, Chief Noc-A-Homa was the official mascot of the Milwaukee Braves.

Players Of The Atlanta Braves

The team of The Atlanta Braves is quite start-studded and has players in the likes of Ian Anderson, Tyler Matzek, and Huascar Ynoa. Moreover, the team is currently managed by Brian Snitker.

He joined the Boston Braves in 1935 and helped to bring more attention to the team.

Ruth retired from his career, as well as from the Boston Braves, with a .181 average.

However, by far, Hank Aaron has to be the most popular player for this team that played in the Major League. The most popular pitcher in MLB record is John Smoltz who managed to accumulate 210 wins and 154 saves. Julio Franco, of the Atlanta Braves, was the oldest player to be a part of a MLB team.
