This animal stands between 30-41.7 in (76-106 cm) tall and weighs between 50.7-396.8 lb (23-180 kg). An adult whitetail has a grey winter coat, and they have a bright reddish coat in summer. It is a herbivorous animal and feeds on nuts, twigs, leaves, fruits, lichen, and fungi.

The Michigan state animal is considered a dangerous pest for the urban area as it can destroy crops in the fields. Also, it carries various pests that have seriously depleted populations of moose and elk.
