What you need to decide if they are worth it. Deutsche Bracke puppies are full of personality. They are athletic, entertaining, and lively. With a confident leader, positive reinforcement, and ample training, these puppies can be a loving and even-tempered family companion.

Did you know...

That Deutsche Bracke is an ancient breed whose real origin cannot be verified. However, it is believed that the Deutsche Bracke or the German Hound originated after different breeds were merged including the pointer breed, Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, and Beagles.

Traditionally, they were used as scent hounds who assisted hunters by locating different games over irregular terrains in harsh weather conditions. Today, they are used for hunting as well as companion animals.

Thanks to their popularity in the Olpe region, located in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, the breed is also called the Olper Bracke. In the region, they are bred for their stamina and efficiency and for seeking out a wide range of animals such as hares and wild boar.

They have an even temperament and a sensitive nose that can pick up the slightest of scents.

They also have loud and resonant barks that can be used for alerting the owner of their find. Deutsche Bracke can be used for hunting alone or in pairs.

The first record of the Deutsche Bracke dog breed in German art and literature is in the 18th century. At this time, there were many similar Bracke breeds within Germany.

But, today, most of these dogs are extinct, the Deutsche Bracke being the exception. The first breed standard for the Deutsche Bracke was written in 1995.

Even though the standard is recognized by the German Kennel Club, the Deutsche Brake has not been officially acknowledged by the UK or American Kennel Clubs. Bracke dogs are quite popular in Germany and in mainland Europe and very rare in the UK and America.

There are different types of Bracke including the Westphalian Bracke that is quite similar to the Deutsche Bracke in appearance but noticeably smaller. The Deutsche Bracke puppy was created for fulfilling the needs not satisfied by the Deutsche Bracke like tracking and hunting through the underbrush and other hard-to-reach locations.

Characteristics and health issues

Even though Deutsche Bracke is considered to be a robust and healthy dog, they are prone to some conditions including the following:

Bloating (GDV) - dogs with deep chests are more likely to suffer from bloating. There is no known cause of this condition.

However, exercising vigorously after eating a large meal can precipitate an event. The stomach of your dog will be first filled with gas and liquid and their abdomen will look physically bloated. If this condition is not taken care of, it can progress to another condition named Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV).

In this condition, the stomach rotates on its axis and entraps the content. If your dog has this condition, it will start panicking, panting, and drooling excessively.

Hip Dysplasia - this is an orthopedic condition that affects the hips of the Deutsche Bracke puppy. Your dog should be screened for this condition before they start mating in order to reduce the prevalence.

Dogs with improperly-formed hips are prone to lifelong lameness and pain. Even though there are corrective surgeries, most dogs are treated with supportive therapies like hydrotherapy and medication. Also, this is a progressive condition which means that as your dog ages, it will get worse.

Cryptorchidism - this is a common condition where either one or both testicles of your dog are unable to descend. Since the testicles are inside their body, your dog is prone to testicular cancer development as the temperature will be too hot inside the body.

If your doctor has cryptorchidism, it is best to remove the affected testicle.

Even though it is possible to remove the affected testicle and leave another one behind so that the dog can breed, it is not advised. Cryptorchidism is an inherited condition which means that it is highly likely that the Deutsche Bracke puppy will be affected as well.

Eye conditions - your Deutsche Bracke can be affected by several eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and glaucoma. It is advised that before mating, you get them screened by a veterinary ophthalmologist.
