The modern Cardigan Welsh Corgis come from a lineage of dogs that were brought to Wales by Celtic tribes about 3,000 years ago. There are two Corgi breeds, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Both the Welsh Corgi dog breeds were used for protecting farms from vermin, and as herding dogs. In modern homes, the Corgi breed of dogs from the British Isles is kept as loving family pets.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are dwarf dogs with short legs but have an extremely high energy level. Both the herding breeds are extremely loyal and vocal too. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are athletic, lively, little cattle herding dogs with a long body, medium-length double coat in various colors, and long tails.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs are intelligent, smart, protective, and love to please their owners.  They are easy to train and are also good with children and other pets. Either, flat on their belly with limbs spread out often called the ‘flying squirrel’ position, or sleeping on their back with the legs up in the air.

Corgis are barn dogs but not terriers, they do not sniff out rats, or bugs from hidden places. They may have a special liking to herd cats, other dogs, and children at home.

When considering the two Welsh Corgi breeds Cardigan Welsh Corgi vs Pembroke Corgi, the main difference is in the place of their origin. The Pembroke Welsh Corgis are from Pembrokeshire and the Cardigan Corgis which are the older of the two breeds originates from Cardiganshire.

Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis are both herding dogs, with a dense double coat, upright ears, and a variety of coat colors. They are often distinguished by their tails. The Cardigan Corgis have a long, fox-like tail while the Pembroke Corgis have a docked tail.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppies are slightly larger with a rounder body. Males of the Welsh Corgi Cardigan breed can weigh up to thirty-eight pounds but Pembroke Welsh Corgi males weigh up to only thirty pounds. Their Cardigan and Pembroke Corgi breeds also have different bone structures. Cardigans have a curvier appearance due to round bone structure and a sloping rear.

The acceptable coat colors mentioned by the AKC for Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis are also different. Cardigans have more varied coat color acceptance in brindle, blue merle, black and white with brindle points, and red sable with white markings. The Welsh Corgi Cardigans have more allowance for their white markings compared to the Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

For the Pembroke Welsh Corgis, the only acceptable coat colors are sable, red, or tricolor with white markings.

They need exercise to stay fit and maintain good dog health. Physical activity is a way to keep them occupied too. Boredom can lead to problems like destructive behavior like chewing, herding, digging, excessive barking, etc. The amount of exercise required by cardigans depends on their age, weight, health conditions, etc. In any case, just a walk in the park will not be enough for this breed.

A Cardigan Welsh Corgi requires a nice, warm spot to rest. The dog should be provided a dog bed placed away from the breeze. Corgis with access to outdoors must be kept cool in summer months with plenty of water and a cool shed. Cardigan Corgis will need a bath depending on the weather and their outdoor activities.
